Hydra or Manticore?

Both boast true 3"×3" tubing, 11-gauge steel rated to 1,000 lb (454 kg), and both are built to outlast our toughest training days. The difference is the holes and hardware, and the attachments that fit.

What you give up a safety net — nothing catches the bar if a rep fails full-depth safeties — spotter arms only catch the bar where you pinned them floor space in front of the rack — you train inside it, not before it a lot of room — this is a facility frame in a garage a free-standing frame — it bolts to your wall, and the timber to do that isn't in the box

What do you want to be able to do?

Forget the fancy attachment names. Choose gear that unlocks your desired training style.

I want to

Do pull-ups

A bar that spans the top of the rack. Choose a fat grip to hammer your forearms, or skinny to rep out more.

Straight Pull Up Bar — from $50.99✓ 3 options fit your rack

I want to

Train my back without a cable machine

A chest-supported pad bolts to the uprights, so you can row heavy without loading your lower back.

Seal Row Pad — from $124.99✓ Fits your Hydra

I want to

Squat heavy with nobody home

Safety straps catch the bar if a rep goes wrong. This is the whole reason to own a rack instead of a stand.

Safety Straps — from $29.99✓ Fits your Hydra

I want to

Do dips

Y-shaped bars pin into the uprights at whatever height suits you, then come off in seconds.

Y Dip Bar — from $94.99✓ Fits your Hydra

I want to

Train legs properly

Leg curl and extension in one attachment — the two movements a barbell alone can't give you.

Leg Curl / Leg Extension — from $279.99✓ Fits your Hydra

I want to

Get the plates off my floor

Pegs bolt onto the back of the rack and hold your plates — and add weight that stops it tipping.

Bolt-On Plate Pegs — from $44.99✓ Fits your Hydra

Before you buy

The two things worth settling here

Will it fit the room?

Measure floor to ceiling before anything else — it eliminates whole shapes in one step. Short uprights build from 72" and clear most 7 ft basements; full-height racks need roughly 8 ft, plus 6–8" above the pull-up bar so you aren't clipping the joists. Every card above says what that rack builds to. If the ceiling is the problem, squat stands and folding racks are the two shapes that work under it.

Which line you're buying into

This is the decision that outlives the rack. 3"×3" tubing takes the full attachment range and is what the Hydra and Manticore are built from. 2.3"×2.3" is lighter and cheaper — a real rack, with a narrower range of things that bolt on. It is also, on the evidence, the range people rate most: our four 2.3" racks carry 697 reviews between them.

What size rack do I need for my ceiling height?

Measure floor to ceiling first. Uprights that build from 72" fit most 7 ft basements and garages; full-height racks need roughly 8 ft. Leave 6–8" of clearance above the bar for pull-ups and overhead pressing.

What's the difference between 3"×3" and 2.3"×2.3" tubing?

3"×3" is the platform the full attachment range is built for and offers cross-brand compatibility. 2.3"×2.3" is lighter and more affordable, with a narrower range of attachments; still a rock-solid rack if you don't need the whole ecosystem.

Are these racks good for commercial gyms?

Yes, the Manticore and Hydra line are built for light commercial work. 2.3" racks suit home gyms and garage gyms best.

Can I use a power rack without bolting it down?

It depends on the type. Flat foot power racks and six foot power racks are free-standing. We highly recommend bolting down squat racks, half racks, and four posts. This makes the rack more stable for kipping and band work. Folding racks are the exception: they mount to the wall.

How much weight can a power rack hold?

Hydra and Manticore are rated to 1,000 lb / 454 kg. The 2.3" x 2.3" (60mm) line is rated 600-800 lb (272-365 kg), depending on the model. Check each attachment product page for its exact rating.

What’s the difference between a power rack and a squat rack?

A squat rack (or squat stand) is two uprights that hold the bar. A power rack is four or more posts that you train inside, with safeties that catch the bar if a rep fails. Train alone and heavy? Get the cage.

Do attachments fit every rack?

No. Attachments are made for one upright size and hole size, so match them to your rack (2.3" with 5/8" holes, Hydra 3"×3" with ⅝" holes, or Manticore 3"×3" with 1" and 5/8" keyholes on the sides).
