Product Details

Get every benefit of a Smith machine without buying a 6-foot standalone unit or losing half your garage—this bolts right onto your existing rack.

  • Transforms your rack, not your floor plan → Attaches directly to compatible power racks, adding guided pressing and squatting without requiring a dedicated Smith machine footprint or separate station.
  • Use your preferred barbell → Choose the BYOB (Bring Your Own Bar) version to lift with your own bar for a truly custom approach.
  • Save $1,000+ over standalone units → Full Smith machines run $1,500-3,000 and eat up 6+ feet of floor space—this gives you the same functionality for a fraction of the cost by working with what you already own.
  • Lift solo without the fear → Built-in safety catches every few inches mean you can max out on bench press at 6 AM without a spotter or risking a bar to the chest—just twist and lock.
  • Zero setup between exercises → Go from squats to bench to rows in seconds on the Smith attachment, then swing out to free weight training on your rack, it's like having two stations in one footprint.
  • Smooth, commercial-grade bearings → The linear rail system glides like butter, not like a rusty playground slide,so you can focus on the lift instead of fighting janky movement.
  • Built to last decades → Heavy-duty steel construction handles daily punishment without developing that sketchy wobble or needing replacement parts every year.

Turn your power rack into a two-in-one training station without giving up your car's parking spot.

Why a Smith Machine?

Because sometimes you need to push your limits without pushing your luck:

  • Lift alone, lift safely → The bar locks into place every few inches, so if you fail a rep, you just twist your wrists and walk away—no dramatic rollouts or emergency calls.
  • Build muscle with confidence → When you're not worried about balancing the bar, you can focus 100% on squeezing the muscle and lifting heavier, which means faster gains.
  • Train through injuries or rehab → The fixed path lets you isolate specific muscles while protecting joints, making it perfect for working around shoulder tweaks or knee issues without ditching leg day entirely.
  • Master form before going free → Learn the movement pattern with training wheels on, then graduate to free weights when you're ready—no shame in building a foundation first.

Your home gym shouldn't require a spotter on speed dial or a fear of getting pinned under iron.

  • Broad Range & Cross-Brand Rack Compatibility

  • BYOB Option — Train With Your Barbell

Choose between a built-in Smith bar or the BYOB (Bring Your Own Barbell) variant, which lets you use your preferred barbell inside the guided Smith track. Keep the knurling, shaft diameter, and feel you trust—without giving up the safety and control of a Smith machine.

  • Space-Saving Smith Machine Performance

Get full Smith machine functionality without sacrificing an entire corner of your home gym. This attachment delivers the controlled bar path of a commercial unit while keeping your footprint the same.

Product is good, installation instructions could be better

I was able to mount this on the Standard Commercial Rack. Several of my questions prior to purchase about fitment (including pictures of my current rack set up) went unanswered by BOS support, which was disappointing. So hopefully this review helps others with same rack. I wanted to make sure that the inside of my rack was still useable for regular barbell work - namely squats. I can confirm that there's sufficient space to continue to use the inside of the rack, especially with the monolifts . The top crossmembers do need to be all lowered by one hole, which is very unfortunate and annoying and probably took the longest. Word of advice, don't be lazy like me and do remove all the plates off the rack before removing the top crossmembers - I'll just leave it at that! It seems like those of us with light commercial rack are an afterthought. I am not sure why the instructions state that attachment can ONLY be mounted on an angle in the commercial light rack. I was able to mount it straight. I think it would make sense for customer support to inquire what kind of rack you have before sending out the hardware. In the end I was left with a bunch of massive bolts , nuts, and washers (I am guessing for Manticore racks) - seems like an unnecessary waste. Also neither the video nor the instructions mention the split washers - there's one master diagram that shows them. One, I would say, significant challenge was adding the components onto the rails once the smith upright was mounted…

    Hi Roman,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review and for helping fellow lifters with the Standard Commercial Rack. We really appreciate you walking through your install experience and pointing out the challenges you ran into along the way. Feedback like this is incredibly valuable and we will be passing your notes about the instructions, hardware clarity, and installation order to our team so we can keep improving the setup experience.

It is great to hear that you were able to mount the Smith Machine Rack Attachment successfully and still keep the inside of your rack usable for barbell work, especially with monolifts in the mix. That is a big win for versatility in a home gym.

We also hear you on the bar rotation feeling a bit tight compared to commercial gym units. The guide system can feel a little stiff at first, but it typically smooths out with regular use as everything breaks in.

Thanks again for sharing your insights and practical tips. Reviews like yours genuinely help both our team and the community.

    Yours in strength,

    The B.o.S. Crew. 💪

    Friggin awesome!!

I got the BYO bar version and this fitted my non-BOS 75mm x 75mm, 1" hole rack beautifully. The build quality is exceptional. It's EXTREMELY solid and the bearings glide like butter on a hot fry pan. One unusual thing that took me aback was the level and quality of the assembly instructions. I'd got so used to extremely basic, usually Chingrish written, instructions with hard to decipher diagrams that the ones that came with this were truly a breath of fresh air. I'd give this a 9.99995 out of 10. The only thing I "modified" was the little screws used for the bar limit stops. I used slightly longer (about 5mm longer) screws which gave me a little bit more fiddle room with the bar hook.

Andy, this is the kind of review that fires us up! Thank you for the epic shout out and for sharing a photo of your setup. That rack looks ready for battle.

We love hearing that the BYOB version fit your 75 by 75 rack like a glove and that the build quality and stability hit the mark. And those buttery smooth bearings? Music to our ears. The fact that the instructions stood out in a sea of confusing manuals makes our day too. Clear guidance and rock solid gear should always go hand in hand.

Appreciate you sharing your small tweak on the limit stop screws as well. That kind of hands on insight is what home gym legends are made of.

9.99995 out of 10? We will take it 😄

    Yours in strength,
    The B.o.S. Crew.

    Kinda fits in Rogue RML-3

Overall- great quality and no complaints for the price point ( I paid 30% off). Surprised BoS can make money on that. I have an old RML-3 with welded side crossmembers. I had to cut the slot longer in the 4 top brackets, but it's in and works great!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BYOB (Bring Your Own Bar) version of the Smith Machine?

The BYOB version lets you use your own barbell instead of a fixed Smith bar. Your bar sits in clamshell-style trolleys that glide along the guide rails, giving you the same controlled Smith machine movement while using the bar you already own. This allows you to customize the feel, knurling, and starting weight of your setup

What barbell sizes are compatible with the BYOB Smith Machine?

The BYOB system is designed for barbells with a shaft diameter between 25–30 mm. This range covers most standard Olympic barbells used in home and commercial gyms.

Does using my own bar change the starting weight?

Yes. The starting weight depends on the bar you install. For example, if you use a typical 45 lb (20 kg) Olympic barbell, the unloaded starting weight will be significantly heavier than the ~36 lb (16.5 kg) hollow Smith bar option.

Can I switch between BYOB and the Smith bar later?

Yes. Bells of Steel offers conversion kits that allow you to switch between BYOB and the bar-included configuration. This means you can start with one version and change later if your training preferences evolve.

What type of weight plates work with the Smith Machine?

The Smith Machine uses Olympic-style sleeves, which are designed for 2-inch (50 mm) Olympic weight plates.

Is the Smith Machine suitable for a home or garage gym?

Yes. The Bells of Steel Smith Machine is designed for garage gyms and home gym setups that want the safety and stability of a guided bar system. The fixed bar path and built-in safety features allow lifters to train solo with more confidence compared to a traditional free-weight barbell setup.

Does the Smith Machine have safety stops?

Yes. The system includes safety catches that allow you to set a safe stopping point for exercises like squats and bench presses. These safeties help prevent the bar from dropping too low, which is especially helpful when lifting alone.

How does a Smith Machine compare to a standalone bar and power rack?

A Smith Machine guides the bar on rails, which helps stabilize the bar path and reduces the need for balance. A power rack uses a free barbell, requiring more stabilization but allowing natural bar movement. Many lifters use a Smith Machine for controlled accessory work and a rack for traditional barbell lifts.

What racks are compatible with the Bells of Steel Smith Machine?

The Smith Machine is designed to work with many power racks, not just Bells of Steel models. It’s compatible with most racks that meet the following requirements: upright tubing between 2.3" × 2.3" and 3" × 3" (58–76 mm), uprights 72" (183 cm) tall or taller, rack width of 47" or 49" (119–124 cm), and side holes sized for 5/8" or 1" hardware. If you're concerned about compatibiltiy, reach out to our team and we'll help you out.

How much weight can the Smith Machine handle?

The Smith Machine attachment is rated for a maximum capacity of 600 lb (272 kg). Combined with the smooth linear bearings and guided rails, it’s designed to handle heavy compound lifts like squats, presses, and rows with confidence.

The Bells of Steel Smith Machine Rack Attachment is a silver metal power rack with a sturdy safety mechanism and barbell. Ideal for squats and bench presses, it features adjustable safety bars, multiple height adjustments, and enhances workout versatility in strength training.
